Boundless K-12 Curriculum: STORYTELLING
How does combining imagery with words tell a story more effectively?
In this suite, “Takes Care of Them,” Dyani White Hawk addresses some of the ways that women care for their communities through actions, family roles, and relationships.
Each dress is titled with a different act of love in both English and Lakota. She says that the Lakota language is used to conceptually speak to specific values and practices for understanding each of their English counterparts but is not a direct translation.
By using images of traditional dresses paired with specific names, White Hawk hopes to tell the story of women in her community.
What visual cues do you see White Hawk use that relate to the words Nurture and Protect?
What images come to mind when you think of the words Nature and Protect?
